Sending you warm wishes for a smooth recovery post-surgery, Shefali. Power to you for advocating for yourself and insisting to be included in your medical decisions. I faced a similar disillusioning experience several months ago after abdominal surgery. One nurse told me that I had woken up several times in the middle of surgery crying. When I came to, I was in so much pain that I couldn't breathe and the sedating opioids had dried out my vocal cords to the point that I couldn't speak. That night was the longest of my entire life. I wept the entire time, wishing for my demise. Neither the floor nor the charge nurse would allow me to consult with an internist or a surgeon, nor would they allow me to eat or drink. I ended up getting severely dehydrated because I was inappropriately kept NPO (nothing by mouth) for 36 hours. Patients deserve better.
